Rituals of Exchange is an ongoing documentary photography project exploring the people, traditions, and social interactions that shape Thame Livestock Market in Oxfordshire.
More than a place of agricultural commerce, the livestock market is a social and cultural space where generations of knowledge, established relationships, and longstanding customs intersect. Through the buying and selling of animals, the market becomes a stage for rituals of negotiation, trust, competition, and community, reflecting a way of life deeply connected to Britain's rural identity.
Approaching the market through a visual anthropological perspective, the project examines the gestures, behaviours, and unspoken codes that underpin these exchanges. It considers not only the economic transactions taking place, but also the human relationships and cultural traditions that give them meaning.
Through observational documentary photography and considered portraits, Rituals of Exchange seeks to create a lasting record of a distinctive rural institution, exploring the relationship between tradition and change, and the enduring significance of physical spaces in which communities gather, interact, and maintain their collective identity.
