Western Reportage in Comparison to Russian and Eastern Bloc Photojournalism Between 1941 and Current Day (2015)
Since the Second World War, photography has been central to how conflicts are recorded and understood. Yet its role as documentary evidence has always been debated, often blurring the line between truthful reporting and propaganda. This study explores Soviet and Russian photography—from state propaganda to later nonconformist artistic practice—and compares it with Western documentary traditions. Through works by photographers including Robert Capa, Bruce Davidson, Yevgeni Khaldei, Joe Rosenthal, and Simon Roberts, it considers how composition, subject matter, and intent shape the messages images communicate across different political and cultural contexts.
